Congress Finally Passes Minimum
Wage Increase After months of delay and tying minimum
wage legislation to controversial war
and tax legislation,
the federal minimum wage will finally begin to increase in July 2007.
In coalition with
Let Justice Roll,
Interfaith Worker Justice, and
hundreds of
other organizations, the Mid-South Interfaith Network has been
pressing
Congress to pass a clean minimum wage increase.
The minimum wage will be raised from
$5.15 to $7.25 in three steps over the
next 25 months. About
13 million workers are expected to benefit from the increase.
After
a decade without a raise, the value of today's federal
minimum wage is
lower than it was in 1950. Even with the increase, workers
still have a
lot of ground to make up. The minimum wage of 1968 had the
purchasing
power of $9.50.
