After more than 3 years of
holding prayer vigils, rallies, and town hall
meetings calling for a
living wage ordinance, as well as mobilizing
thousands of Memphians to
call, email, and write their City Council
members, the Council passed a
living wage ordinance. The
ordinance requires companies that have
service contracts
(such as janitorial, security, or landscaping) with
the City of Memphis to
pay workers on these contracts a living wage.
The Council passed the ordinance on November
21st, 2006 by a vote of 11 to 1. This groundbreaking ordinance is the first of
its kind in Tennessee, and Memphis now joins more than 140 local
governments nationwide that have living wage ordinances.
